Learn to Code

July 14, 2014

Writing code is a creative act.

We teach kids in school to write creatively, though most of them won't publish a great novel.

We teach kids in school to paint, though many of them won't ever have a painting hanging in a gallery.

Why should we not teach them all to code?

— Lindsey Bieda (@lindseybieda) July 5, 2014

Are we so insecure in our positions as builders that we fear other people writing code?

— Lindsey Bieda (@lindseybieda) July 5, 2014

I honestly do not understand how you can comfortably be okay with advocating that coding really should just be for a few.

— Lindsey Bieda (@lindseybieda) July 5, 2014

No, not everyone has/can/will become a professional programmer, but do they need to for it to be valuable to them?

— Lindsey Bieda (@lindseybieda) July 5, 2014

Art and building can be extremely therapeutic (and has been proven to be), because it hits parts of the mind you don't usually use.

— Lindsey Bieda (@lindseybieda) July 5, 2014

Coding doesn't have to be a transferable skill (though, I'd argue it is) for it to be useful to everyone to learn.

— Lindsey Bieda (@lindseybieda) July 5, 2014

The "please don't learn to code we have enough bad coders" mentally reeks of elitism.

— Lindsey Bieda (@lindseybieda) July 5, 2014

Learn to code. Learn to hack. Learn to build something where nothing has existed before.

— Lindsey Bieda (@lindseybieda) July 5, 2014

You should see the look of excitement in someone's face when they code something and get it to run for the first time.

Adults and children both. They suddenly did something they had no idea they were capable of.

— Lindsey Bieda (@lindseybieda) July 5, 2014

They step out from being a consumer of tech. To being a builder. That transition is mind blowing.
